Gulf of Maine Workshop In 1999, for the first time, at a workshop organized by MCBI, an international group of marine scientists identified place in the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank whose exceptional biological resources make them the highest priority areas for protection. These include 29% of the area’s marine (non-estuarine) seabed. The scientists also proposed areas to conserve the region’s marine mammals, seabirds and open-ocean fishes. Human activities are threatening marine biodiversity in New England and the Maritime provinces. The scientists met at a New England Aquarium workshop organized by MCBI with funding from the Massachusetts Environmental Trust. The 21 scientists from Canada and the USA included experts in oceanography, marine geology, marine mammalogy, marine invertebrate zoology and ichthyology. Download the workshop results and maps.
