Hawaii Programs
MCBI works on many Hawaiian and Central Pacific marine issues. We first became involved in Hawaiian marine issues when we were working behind the scenes to establish Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. It was around that time we became aware of the plight of the Hawaiian monk seal, endemic to the Hawaiian islands, and one of the most endangered mammals on earth. We have been working to save the Hawaiian monk seal ever since and have been tracking management of the monument ever since. On top of this, we have worked to establish 2 more monuments in the region: Central Pacific Marine National Monument, and Rose Atoll Marine National Monument. We have recently started working to combat marine debris on the islands and reefs, a serious issue that affects all of our Pacific island ecosystems, possibly none more so than the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. We are also working to strengthen the management plan of the Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary so that it can be a true sanctuary for all marine mammals, inlcuding the Hawaiian monk seal. If you would like to become more involved in this effort, please sign our petition on Facebook.
